Luttinger liquids with boundaries: Power-laws and energy scales

چکیده
We present a study of the one-particle spectral properties for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries. We first consider the Tomonaga-Luttinger model using bosonization. For weak interactions the boundary exponent of the power-law suppression of the spectral weight close to the chemical potential is dominated by a term linear in the interaction. This motivates us to study the spectral properties also within the Hartree-Fock approximation. It already gives power-law behavior and qualitative agreement with the exact spectral function. For the lattice model of spinless fermions and the Hubbard model we present numerically exact results obtained using the density-matrix renormalizationgroup algorithm. We show that many aspects of the behavior of the spectral function close to the boundary can again be understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation. For the repulsive Hubbard model with interaction U the spectral weight is enhanced in a large energy range around the chemical potential. At smaller energies a power-law suppression, as predicted by bosonization, sets in. We present an analytical discussion of the crossover and show that for small U it occurs at energies exponentially (in −1/U) close to the chemical potential, i.e. that bosonization only holds on exponentially small energy scales. We show that such a crossover can also be found in other models. Complete Pseudoparticle Operator Representation for Integrable Electronic Luttinger Liquids
We introduce the pseudoparticle operator algebra that generates all Hubbardchain eigenstates from a single reference vacuum. The occurence of only zeromomentum pseudoparticle forward scattering at all energy scales combined with the infinite pseudoparticle-number conservation laws establish this operator basis as the most suitable for dealing with transport properties at finite frequencies. We ...

We review the progress in the theory of one-dimensional (1D) Fermi liquids which has occurred over the past decade. The usual Fermi liquid theory based on a quasi-particle picture, breaks down in one dimension because of the Peierls divergence in the particlehole bubble producing anomalous dimensions of operators, and because of charge-spin separation. Both are related to the importance of scat...
متن کاملDecay of fermionic quasiparticles in one-dimensional quantum liquids.
The low-energy properties of one-dimensional quantum liquids are commonly described in terms of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, in which the elementary excitations are free bosons. To this approximation, the theory can be alternatively recast in terms of free fermions. In both approaches, small perturbations give rise to finite lifetimes of excitations. We evaluate the decay rate of fermi...
متن کاملTomonaga-Luttinger liquid and Coulomb blockade in multiwall carbon nanotubes under pressure.
We report that the conductance of macroscopic multiwall nanotube (MWNT) bundles under pressure shows power laws in temperature and voltage, as corresponding to a network of bulk-bulk connected Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (LLs). Contrary to individual MWNTs, where the observed power laws are attributed to Coulomb blockade, the measured ratio for the end and bulk obtained exponents, approximately ...
متن کاملFunctional Renormalization-Group Analysis of Luttinger Liquids with Impurities
In one-dimensional quantum wires the interplay of electron correlations and impurities strongly influences the low-energy physics. The diversity of energy scales and the competition of correlations in interacting Fermi systems can be treated very efficiently with the functional renormalization group (fRG), describing the gradual evolution from a microscopic model Hamiltonian to the effective lo...
